Sabra Stroud, 75 - March 05, 2008
Sabra Jolene “Beezie” Stroud, 75, of Rocky Ford, CO, formerly of Gothenburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at her home.
Memorial services were held on Feb. 9 at the Community Presbyterian Church at Rocky Ford with the Revs. Steve Culver and Frank Kaemingk officiating. At her request, cremains will be interred at Lexington, along with her parents, at a later date.
Stroud was born on Aug. 3, 1932, to Joe R. and Mildred M. (Surbaugh) Curry, at Salina, KS. Her mother later married Charles “Buck” Smith who raised her as his own.
She grew up in Gothenburg and graduated from the University of Nebraska in June of 1954, with a bachelor of science degree in education.
Stroud began her teaching career in York in the fall of 1955, then moved to San Diego, CA. In 1957, she traveled to Madrid, Spain, and began teaching at the American School.
While teaching in Spain, she met and married Paul Hutson, a career Air Force officer. The couple travelled extensively in Europe, and on return to the United States, were stationed at Shreveport, LA, where she served as president of the Officer’s Wives Club.
Following her husband’s retirement, they spent a year traveling the United States, then moved to Denver, CO, where she resumed her teaching career.
In 1980, Stroud moved to Rocky Ford and began a new career with R2 School District, teaching third grade, and later Chapter One reading.
?On April 24, 1981, she was united in marriage to Jim Stroud at Green Mountain Falls in Rye, CO, joining together with his children.
?She retired from teaching in 1996, and began working as a caregiver for Alzheimer’s patients.
?Stroud was a member of PEO for over 50 years, most recently in Chapter EU at Rocky Ford, and was a member of the community Presbyterian Church of Rocky Ford.
Teaching was her major joy in life with a love for children as well as animals, particularly her dachshunds and basset hounds, according to family members.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her grandson, Michael Stroud Rutherford.
Survivors include: her husband, Jim Stroud of Rocky Ford; two daughters—Belle (Mitch) Sandlin of Chandler, AZ, and Jennifer R. Hunt of Rocky Ford; a son, Jeffrey (Laura) Stroud of Grand Junction; five grandchildren; uncle, William (Sully) Sullivan of Oklahoma City; aunt, Clara Kirtland of Salina, KS; two cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Arkansas Valley Hospice and the Community Presbyterian Church.
