Franklin Munson, 91 - November 28, 2007
Franklin Louis Munson, 91, of Imperial, formerly of Gothenburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at the Chase County Community Hospital at Imperial.
Services were held Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Bruce-Graham Funeral Home in Fort Dodge, IA. Interment followed at the Dayton Cemetery.
Munson was born the youngest child of Peter and Hulda Christina (Wise) Munson on the family farm near Burnside, IA, on June 6, 1916. On Aug. 6 of that year, he became a baptized member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Burnside.
He attended Burnside Consolidated Schools until his eighth grade year when he took over the family farm due to his father’s failing health.
On Nov. 26, 1942, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Alice Garrett, at the West Minster Memorial Presbyterian Church in Fort Dodge. To this union, four children were born.
Munson and his family moved to a farm near Callender, IA, for three years. In 1964, his wife Mary Jane passed away.
He continued to farm on the family farm until 1970. He also worked for Palm Grove Coop, Johnson Clay Works in Colorado and US Gypsum, from which he retired in 1981, after 15 years.
In July of 1973, he married Virginia Rose Salvatore Devlin. The couple made their home at Moorland, where he grew a large garden and assisted his wife with her upholstery business. Later, they moved to an acreage near Coalville. His wife preceded him in death in 1993.
In September of 1993, he moved Gothenburg to be near his son, Richard. He continued to garden there as well, often trading his produce for baked goods with his neighbors and working on his antique tractors with his son.
In 2000, he moved with his son’s family to Pilger, then in 2003, they moved to Imperial.
He continued to enjoy his hobby of gardening and harvested his last crop this fall, and as usual, shared his produce with family and friends. He also enjoyed riding his tricycle to the store, eating dinner at the senior center, watching his favorite shows and sports on television, reading the Fort Dodge Messenger and creating scrapbooks, according to family members.
Munson was preceded in death by: his parents, Peter and Hulda; his first wife, Mary Jane; his second wife, Virginia; a brother, Clifford; brother-in-law, Kenny Koppen.
Survivors include: his children—Annette (Bob) Palmer of Marshalltown, Gary of Emmetsburg, Richard (Letitia) of Imperial and Martha (Bill) Fisher of Des Moines; step-children—Cora Stalzer, Charles and Larry Devlin of California and Carl Devlin of Iowa; seven grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Koppen of Fort Dodge; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Burnside, IA, and to the Imperial Senior Center in Imperial.
