Ruth Meyer, 72 - October 24, 2007
Ruth Maie Meyer, 72, of Mitchell, formerly of Cozad and Gothenburg, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at her home following an extended battle with cancer.
A memorial service with the cremains will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Morrill Methodist Church with the Rev. Carroll Plisek officiation.
Meyer was born on Nov. 7, 1934, at Burchard, the fourth of six children to Harold and Barbara (Nelson) Hood. Her family lived at Cozad where she grew up and went to school through the 10th grade.
She received her GED later in life and received a certificate in hairdressing from Joseph’s School of Beauty in North Platte.
On July 10, 1951, she was united in marriage to Lawrence R. Sheets, at Glenwood, IA. To this union, five children were born, the first a daughter who died at two and one-half months old and the last two were twins.
She and her family lived in Cozad most of their married lives as parents to children at home, before moving to Boise, ID, where they resided for seven years, and she raised her family as well as helped operate a tavern.
Meyer and her family returned to Cozad and she went to work at Monroe Manufacturing. She also spent a number of years behind the wheel of a “big rig,” driving truck for Nebraska Plastics
She was divorced in 1976 and married Curtis Meyer on Sept. 3, 1977, at Cozad. They lived in Cozad and Gothenburg until his death in July of 2000, when she moved to Mitchell to reside with her daughter, Connie.
?Meyer served as a member of Sunflower Chapter No. 214 Order of the Eastern Star and was heavily involved in the Morrill Methodist Church as well as volunteering at Regional West Medical Center.
?In her free time, she enjoyed bowling with her friends, according to family members.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Harold and Barbara; an infant daughter, Vonda Raie; her husband and father of her children, Lawrence R. Sheets; second husband, Curtis Meyer.
Survivors include: her four children—Lawrence “Butch” (Debbie) Sheets of Bartonville, IL, Loren Dean (Michelle) Sheets of Grand Island, Lonnie Ray (Katherine) Sheets of Pahrump, NV, and Connie Raie Morrill of Mitchell; five siblings—Helen (Louis) Mak of Gothenburg, Wayne (Joyce) Hood of Norfolk, Pete (Peggy) Hood of Big Springs, William (Mary) Hood of Scottsdale, AZ, and Robert (Vicki) Hood of Guernsey, WY; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the volunteers and friends of the Regional West Medical Center and to Prairie Haven Hospice.
