John Holbrook, 28 - July 18, 2007
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 21, at the Sandhills Community Bible Church, south of Mullen, at 1 p.m. MT, with the Rev. Mark Danielson officiating. Burial will be at the Seneca Cemetery with military honors.
A memorial book will be available for signing on Friday, July 20, from 4-8 p.m. MT, at the church.
Holbrook was born on Oct. 24, 1978, at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Mullen to Gar and Donna (Sevier) Holbrook.
He attended Mullen Public School, graduating in 1998, and enlisted in the Navy on the Delayed Entry Program, leaving for basic training soon after graduation.
Holbrook served as a gunners mate 3rd class for four years on the USS Seattle, which made three trips to the Persian Gulf. He received several military honors.
At the time of his death, he was one of 23 new members out of hundreds of applicants in the San Antonio Fire Fighting Academy. He had worked hard for over a year to be a part of the team, family members said.
?Holbrook cared for others and made friends easily, according to family members. He was adventurous and enjoyed being outside swimming, shooting and canoeing with family and friends.
?Survivors include: his father and step-mother, Gar and Deb Holbrook of Johnson Lake; his step-father and mother, Tom and Donna Sevier of Seneca; sister, brother-in-law and nephew, Suzie, Ross and Casey Wahlgren of Gothenburg; sister, Robin Sevier of Seneca; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Tyhe Sevier of Mullen; grandparents—Don Herbig of North Platte, LaVina Sevier and John and Marge Hardy, all of Seneca; godfather, John Sibbitt of Hyannis; godmother, Mel Taylor of Hyannis; special friend, Denise Beresky of Houston, TX; aunts and uncles—Rahn and Peg Bek of Houston and Don and Connie Slingsby of Broken Bow; numerous cousins and a host of friends.
Memorials are suggested to a college education fund for his sister and brother.
