Dustin Von Loh, 24 - August 19, 2009
Dustin A. “Dusty” Von Loh, 24, of Elm Creek, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center in Lincoln.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Elwood High School Gymnasium with the Rev. Scott Guthrie officiating. Burial with military honors will take place at the Elwood Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday (today) at Berryman Funeral Home at Cozad.
Von Loh was born Nov. 9, 1984, at Lexington to Robert and Kristi (Schultz) Von Loh. He attended school in Lexington and Elwood where he participated in wrestling, football and track.
He graduated from Elwood High School in May of 2003, and went on to attend Wyoming Technical College in Laramie, WY, where he became a certified diesel mechanic in March of 2004.
On June 8, 2006, he married Heather Nickel. The couple celebrated their marriage with family and friends in August of 2006 as they had eloped. On Nov. 7, 2006, a daughter, Grace Elizabeth Von Loh was born, and a newborn son, Dustin Robert Von Loh, is due in December of 2009.
Von Loh enlisted in the Army National Guard on May 20, 2005. He answered his country’s call to duty and was activated on Sept. 1, 2006. He served as a Cavalry Scout with the 755th Recon/Decon Company in Iraq from Dec. 5, 2006, to Dec. 1, 2007. His last assignment was as an infantryman with Troop C 1/134th Long Range Surveillance. He had recently been promoted to the rank of sergeant (E-5).
He loved his family and enjoyed big trucks, fast motorcycles, cowboying and camping, according to family members.
Von Loh was preceded in death by: his paternal grandparents, Gailard and Nelia Von Loh; his maternal grandparents, Elmer and Arlene Schutz.
Survivors include: his wife, Heather, and their daughter, Grace, both of Elm Creek; his parents, Robert (Kristi) Von Loh of Elwood; a brother, Justin Von Loh, 2LT Nebraska National Guard of Omaha; father- and mother-in-law, Brian (Julia) Nickel of Elm Creek; two brothers-in-law—Richard Kennedy and Jeremy Nun, both of Elm Creek; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A memorial has been established.
