Dorothy Janus, 84 - November 25, 2009
Dorothy Janus, 84, of Eustis died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.
Services were held on Monday, Nov. 23, at the United Methodist Church in Eustis with the Rev. Tess Hufford officiating. Burial took place at the East Cemetery at Eustis.
Janus was born May 27, 1925, in Frontier County to Phillip and Elnora (Perkins) Johnson. She graduated from Curtis High School in 1943 and taught country school for two years in the Farnam and Orafino area.
On March 6, 1946, she was united in marriage to Kenneth “Butch” Janus. The couple resided at Eustis where they lived their entire married life. To this union, five children were born.
She worked several years helping her husband build a family custom harvesting business, Janus Transfer. The family spent many years together following the harvest through Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. She would cook for the hired crew as well as drive the grain trucks.
Janus was a member of the United Methodist Church, active in the church choir, the United Methodist Women and she served on various church boards and committees. She was an instrumental part of a team of citizens who established and developed the Eustis Senior Center as well as an employee of the center for several years. Eustis Craft Fair, Wurst Tag, and the Bloodmobile, among others, were a few of the community activities where she enjoyed volunteering. She was also an active member of the Eustis American Legion Auxiliary.
Her hobbies included gardening and canning the produce to share with family and friends. She also enjoyed music and polka dancing, singing in the church choir and joining her daughters in voice at various church-related activities, according to family members. One of her greatest joys was to have all her grandchildren close and to be able to watch them grow and attend their activities.
Janus was preceded in death by: her husband in 1982, Kenneth “Butch” Janus; an infant son, Darrell; a daughter, Rhonda; her parents, Phillip and Enora Johnson; brothers—Clarence and Raymond Johnson; her mother and father-in-law, Eugene and Sophie Janus; sisters-in-law—Doris West, Ruth Ann Janus and Carole Johnson; brothers-in-law—Jim West and John Gilbert.
Survivors include: her daughters—Sharolyn (Jim) Schmeeckle and Tammy (Doug) Cochrane, and son, Tony (Deb) Janus, all of Eustis; seven grandchildren—Jason (Debbie) Schmeeckle of Lincoln, Casey (Jill) Schmeeckle of Omaha, Andy (Josi) Cochrane of Eustis, Chris Cochrane and Lisa Cochrane of Kearney, Torrey (Cody) Gerdes of Lincoln, and Zachary Janus of Odessa, TX; four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; a brother, Gene Johnson of Gothenburg, sisters-in-law—Gertrude Gilbert of Bowling Green, OH, Ruth Johnson of Ogallala, and Beverly Johnson of Cozad; numerous nieces and nephews.
