Donald Rubenthaler, 83 - June 17, 2011


Donald D. Rubenthaler, 83, of Gothenburg died Friday, June 17, 2011, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
Services were conducted at the Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 21, with Jim Gonzales, PMA, officiating. Interment took place at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Rubenthaler was born March 25, 1928, at Brady, son of Ted and Signe (Helberg) Rubenthaler.
He grew up north of Brady attending Wild Horse Valley School from first through eighth grade. He then attended Brady High School and graduated valedictorian of his class. Following high school, he attended Wesleyan University for a year.
Rubenthaler served his country during the Korean War from 1951-53. He was private first class, 34th Engineering Base Photo Mapping Co. stationed at Tokyo, Japan.
On April 15, 1956, he married Lois Holscher at the St. John’s Lutheran Church at rural Ogallala. The couple resided north of Brady where he farmed and ranched until they moved to Gothenburg in 2001.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, north of Gothenburg, where he served on the church council numerous times and was the Sunday school superintendant.
Rubenthaler enjoyed his family as well as reading and playing cards and games, according to family members.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Ted and Signe; his wife, Lois in 2008; two brothers-in-law—Adolph Holscher and Calvin Nelson.
Survivors include: his daughter, Jill Rubenthaler of Gothenburg; two sons—Dean (Marlinda) Rubenthaler and Dirk (Debbie) Rubenthaler, all of Gothenburg; grandchildren—Joey (Kristen) Rubenthaler of Bellevue, Kayla Rubenthaler of Lincoln, and Stephanie Rubenthaler of Gothenburg; step-grandchildren—Jeremy (Candace) Harms and Brandon Harms, all of Gothenburg; step-great-grandchildren—Brittany, William and Regan Harms of Gothenburg; a brother, Jim (Marilyn) Rubenthaler; a sister, Eileen Nelson; sister-in-law, Donna Holscher; numerous nieces and nephews.
