Whipple was born on July 8, 1923, at Lynch to Thomas and Bessie (Hight) Welfl. At age 3, her parents passed away and she and her sisters were raised by an aunt and uncle on a farm south of Burke, SD.
She married Karl Whipple on Sept. 30, 1940, at Butte. They moved to the Brady area in 1951. Margaret worked at the telephone company as an operator, and worked at Weber’s grocery store for a number of years.
In 1969 they purchased the Conoco Service station and in 1972 they converted the storeroom into a grocery store. In 1984, they sold the business due to Karl’s bad health. After selling the business Margaret cooked at the Hitchin Post.
In 2003, they moved to Gothenburg. Karl passed away in 2005 and Margaret moved in 2007 to Arapahoe to be close to her son.
She was a member of the Brady Lion’s Club for many years, Brady United Methodist Church and Gothenburg Methodist Church. In 1980 she received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Karl, brother Eddie Welfl, sister Helen Meiers and great-grandson Garrett Bailey.
Survivors include: her son Thomas E. (Jeanne) Whipple of Arapahoe; two daughters—Janice M. (Marvin) Dewey of North Platte and Marlene K. (Ed) Myers of Brady; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister Alice Kortmeyer of California.
