Shirley York, 73 - April 19, 2012
Shirley M. York, 73, of Cozad, formerly of Gothenburg, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Golden Living Care Center at Cozad.
Services will take place on Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Cozad with the Rev. Doug Smith officiating. Burial will be at the Cozad Cemetery.
A visitation will be conducted on Friday, April 20, from 1 to 8 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad, who is in charge of arrangements.
York was born Sept. 11, 1938, at Gothenburg, to Paul and Bonnie (Winans) Bratten. She attended rural school at Wild Horse Valley through the eighth grade and continued her education and graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1956.
She was raised at Wild Horse Valley north of Brady, where her family owned a ranch that had been in the family for two generations. They attended the Svea Dahl Church that her grandfather was integral in building.
On Aug. 16, 1957, she married Carl York. The couple made their home in Cozad where they raised their children.
When their children entered school, she began work at the meat department of a local grocery, and eventually went on to work at First Bank & Trust in Cozad for 22 years, until her health failed in 1988. She loved visiting with all of the customers and enjoyed her co-workers, said family members.
York was a musician, enjoying piano, organ and accordion. She enjoyed singing wtih the First United Methodist Choir and being the musician for the Cozad Does Drove for many years, of which she was a member.
She enjoyed their cabin at Midway Lake, and was very proud of the fact that she usually caught the biggest fish, family members said. She took swimming lessons as an adult and also skied across Midway Lake. She loved to travel and enjoyed all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean as well.
York and her husband were involved with the Cozad Elks Lodge, and she supported him through various office chairs, and enjoyed travelling to numerous lodges across the state and nation, according to family members. She also liked to paint outside and collected cardinals and cobalt blue dishes.
York was preceded in death by: her parents, Paul and Bonnie; a brother, Art.
Survivors include: her husband, Carl York of Cozad; son, David York of Denver, CO; a daughter, Susan (Kris) Kloepping of Cozad; grandson, Adam (Kristen) Kloepping of Chetek, WI; granddaughter, Sara Kloepping of Kearney; great-grandchildren—Emma, Kaden and Braxton of Chetek, WI; brother, Roger (Marilyn) Bratten of Brady; a sister, Sharon (Dale) Meyer of New London, WI; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established.
