Roger Powell, 62 - May 02, 2012
Roger Ray Powell, 62, of North Platte, passed away May 2, 2012, at his home.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, May 7, at Adams and Swanson Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, at Harvest Christian Fellowship with Pastor Ron Lauber officiating. Burial will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors graveside.
Powell was born on Jan. 26, 1950, to Dewey and Lucille Rae (Maher) Powell in Sutherland. He attended North Platte Public Schools.
On Aug. 6, 1968, he married Judy Dolan in North Platte. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Rhode Island aboard the USS Wasp for three years. After his discharge he and his family returned to North Platte. He worked at Riverland Construction and Roberts Dairy before joining UPS in 1973. He worked for UPS for 35 years before retiring in May 2008.
Powell was a member of Harvest Christian Fellowship since 1990 and the Veteran Motorcycle Club. He had a motorcycle accident in May 1978. Judy led him to the Lord three days after that and he never turned back, the family said.
He was an avid fisherman and motorcycle rider. He also enjoyed playing with the praise and worship team. His greatest joy in life was his family, especially his grandchildren, the family said. He liked to watch his grandchildren play sports and just being with them.
The family said he will be remembered as being ornery and fun-loving. He was a very loving and giving man who could relate to anybody.
Powell was preceded in death by: his mom, Lucille; grandparents Ray and Dorothy “Dot” Maher; niece, Sheryl Powell; nephew, Myron Powell; brother-in-law, Billy Dolan; and father- and mother-in-law, Dick and Phyllis Dolan.
Survivors include: his wife Judy of North Platte; daughters—Charity (Nate) Wyatt of Gothenburg, and Becky (Jimmy) Serrano of North Platte; sons—Jeramie Powell of Gothenburg and Casey Powell of North Platte; father Dewey Powell of North Platte; granddaughters—Emily Ann, Haylee, Addison, Jules, Ellie, Lilith; grandsons—Tucker and Maxwell; brothers—Merle (Sheila) Powell of North Platte, Steve Powell of Michigan; sisters—Ellen (Gary) Dimmitt of North Platte, Maxine (Larry) Baumgarder of Grand Island and Linda Richardson of North Platte; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial has been established.
