James Cunning, 83 - May 30, 2012
James “Jim” R. Cunning, 83, of Gothenburg died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital in Gothenburg.
Graveside services will be conducted at the Gothenburg Cemetery on Monday, June 4, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Larry Viter officiating. Burial will be at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Cunning was born June 18, 1928, at Hopkins, MO, to Ray and Nettie (Peve) Cunning. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Gothenburg where he grew up and graduated from Gothenburg High School.
He enlisted with the United States Air Force on Sept. 13, 1950, and was honorably discharged on Sept. 12, 1954.
Cunning and his wife had two children, and in 1954, the family moved to Alamogordo, NM. During this time, he was employed as a security guard at White Sands Missile Range. In 1981, he moved back to Gothenburg.
He loved coaching little league sports and watching Nebraska football games, said family members. His greatest joy was watching and supporting young athletes in all sports.
Cunning was preceded in death by: his father, Ray; his mother, Nettie; brothers—Clyde, Charles, Wren Eugene and Johnnie Francis; a sister, Pearle.
Survivors include: his daughter, Denise (Allen) Musgrove of Los Lunas, NM; a son, Gary (Dana) Cunning of Old Hickory, TN; grandchildren—Amy (Shane) Bell of New Mexico, Staci Musgrove and Amber (Walt) Ackley, all of Texas, Cody Cunning and Summer Cunning of Tennessee; great-grandchildren—Kelsey, Kaden, Jaden and Melia; numerous extended family members.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
