Elaine Johnson, 86 - July 05, 2012
Elaine Anna Johnson, 86, of Holdrege, formerly of Loomis, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Holdrege Memorial Homes.
Services will be conducted at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege on Monday, July 9, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jamie Strickler officiating. Interment will be at the Moses Hill Cemetery in rural Phelps County.
Johnson was born Jan. 20, 1926, on a family farm in Franklin County, southwest of Wilcox, to George and Margaret (Harms) Schubert. She and her twin, Lorraine, were the first born children, second child was her brother, Dwaine, followed by the youngest sister, Evon.
She attended grade school at Franklin County District No. 55, later attending Wilcox High School, where she graduated with the Class of 1943.
Johnson was confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hildreth.
On May 2, 1945, she was united in marriage at Holdrege to Kermit Roy Johnson of Loomis by the Rev. Bussertt at the Lutheran parsonage. To this union, four children were born. The couple made their home at the Clara and Hattie Dane homestead west of Moses Hill, later moving to Glenn and Lillie Johnson’s place, east of Loomis in the mid-1950s.
She was employed with Phelps Memorial Health Center for 23 years in the Respiratory Therapy Department until her retirement in 1991.
Johnson was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church of Holdrege and was active in serving groups, Bible study and quilting.
She enjoyed sewing and made many quilts for family and friends, said family members. She also enjoyed cooking and baking with a specialty for homemade cookies and cinnamon rolls. In her spare time, she was an avid gardener and passed on her love of flowers to both of her daughters.
In January of 2005, she began to make her home at Holdrege Memorial Homes with her husband, Kermit, where she resided until her passing.
Johnson was preceded in death by: her parents, George and Margaret; her husband, Kermit in 2010; a sister, Evon Dill; grandson, Michael Sheen.
Survivors include: her four children—Joan (Steve) Sheen of Kearney, Gene (Marjorie) Johnson of Douglasville, GA, Merle (Debra) Johnson of Ann Arbor, MI, and Janell (Larry) Rossen of Gothenburg; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; twin sister, Lorraine Gracey of Holdrege; a brother, Dwaine (Sherri) Schubert of Union, OR; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial has been established to be designated at a later date.
The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home of Holdrege is in charge of the arrangements.
