Rebecca Jane Messersmith, 72 - November 30, 2012

Rebecca Jane Messersmith, 72, of Gothenburg passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Gothenburg.
Memorial services will take place at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Larry Viter officiating. Inurnment will be at the Farnam Cemetery.
Messersmith was born July 29, 1940, at Jacksonville, FL, daughter of Thomas Minor Hewitt and Geraldine Julia (McDermott) Hewitt.
In 1943, she moved to Lexington, where she graduated from Lexington High School, and lived there until 1958. She attended Kearney State College and was a member of Delta Pi Beta sorority.
She was united in marriage to Delvin Lynn Messersmith in 1962. To this union two children were born, Heidi Julia in 1969 and Tyler Minor in 1979. The couple resided at Grand Island for 10 years, then moved to Gothenburg.
Messersmith was employed as a cook at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital from 1993 to 1998, then became a CNA and worked for Long-Term Care.
She volunteered as a Brownie Scout leader from 1966 to 1969, and was involved with the Boy Scouts program from 1987 to 1990. She enjoyed hobbies such as crocheting, knitting and cooking, family members said.
Messersmith was preceded in death by: her husband, Delvin Messersmith; her parents, Thomas and Geraldine Hewitt; step-father, Hugo Winter; son-in-law, Brad Hueftle.
Survivors include: her daughter, Heidi Hueftle of Kimball; her son, Tyler Messersmith of Vermillion, SD; grandsons—Eli Hueftle of Sidney and Cain Hueftle of Kimball; granddaughters—Elizabeth Messersmith and Adalynn Messersmith; great-grandson, Evan Heuftle; sisters—Sarah Alvizon of Anaheim, CA, Judi Sedlacek of Reed Springs, MO, and Melinda Blough of Loveland, CO; special friend, Mary Fritch; numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Children’s Home.
