Mary Mathieu, 94 - March 06, 2013Mary Aileen Mathieu, 96, of Gothenburg died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
Services will be conducted at the First United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 9, at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Interment will follow at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
A visitation will take place at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg on Friday, March 8, from 1 to 8 p.m.
Mathieu was born Sept. 17, 1916, at Gothenburg, the daughter of Daniel Lee and Oi Cleo (Greene) Kinyon. She attended Gothenburg’s grade school and high school. She was a graduate of Gothenburg High School Class of 1934 as its valedictorian.
She then attended Nebraska Wesleyan University graduating in 1939. She was an educator and taught vocal music at Sterling from 1939 to 1940.
On Sept. 4, 1940, she was united in marriage to Lewis G. Mathieu. To this union, a son was born. The couple resided in Gothenburg until moving to Holdrege where they lived for 20 years before moving back to Gothenburg.
Mathieu was a past-president of UMW and president of the Mother’s Club in Holdrege, president of the Gothenburg Women’s Club from 1955 to 1956, and also served other offices in UMW.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Lewis Gaulden Mathieu; her parents, Daniel Lee and Oi Cleo Kinyon; her son, Lewis Gaulden Mathieu, Jr.; a sister, Dorothy French.
Survivors include: her daughter-in-law, Sharron Mathieu of Gothenburg; two granddaughters—Merilee Parks of Gothenburg and Shari Murer of Lincoln; a grandson, William Mathieu of Lincoln; great-granddaughter, Heidi (Jared) Bussing of Omaha; great-grandsons—Joseph and Zachary Murer of Grand Island; great-great-granddaughters—Wren and Sophia Bussing of Omaha; a great-great-grandson, Devin Bussing of Omaha; numerous other relatives.
Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church, 1401 Lake Ave., Gothenburg, NE 69138.
