Pickup, camper catch fire

Afternoon blaze: Firefighters from the Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call at 12:23 p.m.

Friday at the home of John Garner south of town on Banner Road. Firemen found a Ford pickup and a fifth-wheel camper engulfed in flames. Fire Chief Mark Ballmer estimated the damage at $15,000 to $20,000, and both vehicles were declared a loss. He said the cause appeared to be a cigarette flipped into a bucket of gasoline. “It is a good reminder to be careful disposing of cigarettes,” Ballmer said.
