The Kuhlman Bunch

Gothenburg couple has cared for foster children for 18 years.

Bertha Kuhlman’s heart breaks when she sees little ones who can’t fend for themselves.

Her husband, Phil Kuhlman, loves children.

That’s why for 18 years they’ve welcomed into their home children, who cannot stay with biological parents for various reasons.

“It’s not always about abuse or neglect. It’s about parents asking for help,” Bertha said.

What the Kuhlmans do is foster parenting, keeping and caring for children overnight or for several years.

The couple currently has five children under their roof, ranging in age from 2 to 16.

It all started in 1998, when the Kuhlman’s biological daughter, Victoria, was 9 years old.

“We thought it would be good for Victoria to have other kids besides just her parents,” Bertha said.
