Boys set baseline for season at Kearney Indoor
Swedes take gold in six events.
KEARNEY—Even though many of the teams participating in the Class B segment of the University of Nebraska at Kearney Indoor Invite on Friday weren’t complete, the meet still provided the Gothenburg boys with a solid point of reference for the 2010 season.
The Swedes got off to a good start winning six events and finishing second as a team with 84.5 points.
Aurora ran away with the team title earning 113.5 points.
“I knew Aurora was going to be tough,” coach Steve Reeves said of the Huskies. “They won the state football title and they have a lot of depth. Aurora is one of my favorites to be the Class B track champion as well.”
That doesn’t take anything away from the Gothenburg boys, though.
Swede junior Tannor Mroczek won both sprint races, taking the 55-meter in 6.65 seconds and the 200-meter in 23.87 seconds.
“Tannor really got out quick and ran well,” Reeves said.
Teammate Mark Hilderbrand, a senior, won the 400-meter dash in 52.77 seconds and the 55-meter hurdles in 8.17 seconds.
“Mark is such a strong competitor,” Reeves said. “He works hard in everything he does.”
Senior Andrew Collins also won an individual gold in the 1600-meter run, beating the second-place opponent by six-tenths of a second.
Gothenburg’s sixth gold came in the 4x400 relay.
Hilderbrand and Collins teamed up with Patrick Reeves and Landen Haake for a time of 3:41.47.
“It’s encouraging to see the kids work hard,” Reeves said. “It was good for the first meet and provides us with a baseline. Now we’ve got to work to get better every week.”
The Swede boys will return to the UNK indoor track on Friday for the Kearney Invite, going up against Class A opponents from Kearney, Grand Island and Omaha South.
The non-scoring meet begins at 5 p.m.
