School’s drug testing policy begins implementation

If you are the parent of a child in grades 7 - 12 at Gothenburg Public Schools, chances are you were presented with a new form to sign last week. Last month the GPS Board of Education approved a policy to enforce mandatory drug and alcohol testing on certain students, and this week parents got their first look at the consent forms resulting from that policy.

The testing pool will include students in grades 7-12 participating in any activity in which there is a competition with other schools. This includes academic components such as art, band, choir, ag and quiz bowl. The district has budgeted about $10,000 for the program, based on comparisons to schools of similar size who have already implemented the testing.
