Swedes avenge loss to Perkins Co.

Volleyball team manages win at home.

It took until the third match of Gothenburg’s four-team round-robin at home on Saturday but the two-set win the Swedes managed over Perkins County was worth the wait.

Gothenburg went 1-2 on the day losing to Ord in the first round and Holdrege in the second before defeating Perkins County to avenge an earlier loss to the Lady Plainsmen.

Coach Becky Costello said the last match of the day against Perkins County was the best game the Swedes have played so far this season.

“We got ahead and we stayed ahead,” she said. “We passed well, we attacked well and we played good defense.”

The 25-21, 25-13 victory over 10-7 Perkins County proved to the girls, the coach said, that aggressive play for an entire match will pay off.

“I think we mentally took a step forward,” Costello said.

McKenzie Geiken served for 12 points in the match with 10 set assists.

Joslyn Oliver went 7-for-7 hitting with six kills and Jacey Wiggins added five kills.

Earlier, the Swedes lost a close one to Ord in the opening game 25-20, 25-21.

“We played them pretty well,” Costello said. “We were aggressive and made a lot of plays off the block.”

But Gothenburg trailed in both sets of the match and was forced to come from behind to make it close.

“I felt good about the effort but we just can’t let errors dig us a hole,” Costello said.
