Swedes still searching for success
Undefeated Dusters hand girls sixth loss.
The losing streak stretched to six straight games Friday night for Gothenburg’s girls basketball team but it certainly wasn’t due to a lack of effort.
The well-balanced and unbeaten Holdrege Dusters downed the Swedes 77-32 sending Gothenburg to 0-6 on the season.
“Holdrege is a great team,” said Swede coach Tim Peterson of the Class B pre-season state-ranked Dusters. “They are well-rounded on defense, they rebound well and they shoot the ball well.”
At the same time, Gothenburg’s inexperienced girls are still looking for consistency and leadership, the coach said.
The Swedes were tied with the Dusters 2-2 with 6:30 to play in the first quarter.
Then Holdrege broke the game open and never looked back.
Gothenburg trailed 27-7 at the end of the first quarter and faced a deep 42-10 hole at halftime.
“We shot the ball better than we did the night before,” Peterson said. “But Holdrege is the real deal. They’re going to cause everybody some problems.”
The Swedes shot 27% from the field, compared with 18% the night before and were 73% from the line.
Sophomore Taylor Wolf led Gothenburg with nine points.
The most telling statistical category on Friday, Peterson said, was rebounding.
The Dusters pulled down 27 rebounds including 12 on the offensive boards. Gothenburg managed 15 total rebounds.
