One win away from return trip to Lincoln
Eagle girls cruise through sub-district.
COZAD—There was plenty of hoopla when the Brady girls basketball team qualified for the state tournament last year for the first time ever.
Despite an opening-round loss at state in 2010, the underclassmen decided then they wanted to do it again.
“They’ve been pretty focused on getting back to Lincoln,” said coach Lance Arterburn. “That’s what we’ve been working toward all season.”
The Eagles took a leap toward Lincoln last week when they cruised through the D2-9 sub-district in Cozad.
In the semi-finals on Feb. 15, No. 1 seeded Brady easily handled No. 4 Medicine Valley 60-25.
“We knew going in we shouldn’t have any trouble with Med Valley,” Arterburn said. “But you don’t want to look past anyone either.”
Junior Courtney Widick led the team with 13 points and senior Jessica Schrad added 12 points.
That win moved the Eagles into the sub-district final against Eustis-Farnam on Thursday.
“We didn’t play Eustis-Farnam during the season so it was kind of an unknown,” Arterburn said. “I knew they would be big and physical and those are the kind of games that worry me a little bit.”
There were no worries, though, as the Eagles prevailed 39-25.
Brady shot out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed in the game but the Eagles didn’t put the game out of reach for the Knights until late in the fourth period.
Brady led 8-2 at the end of the first quarter and was up 14-9 at halftime.
“We missed so many easy baskets,” Arterburn said. “I think I counted at least 12 points we could have had in lay-ups with no one even near us and we missed. We just can’t miss those.”
