Boys take team title at Kearney

Four Swedes win events for Gothenburg.

KEARNEY—The first track and field competition of the season serves as a baseline for most high school teams.

It shows where competitors stack up and areas for improvement.

In Gothenburg’s case, the boys set the bar pretty high right off the bat.

The Swedes finished first at the University of Nebraska at Kearney Indoor Invite Saturday in Cushing Fieldhouse.

Gothenburg scored 88 points followed by Adams Central in second with 73.

“Overall our boys competed strong,” said Swede coach Steve Reeves. “It was pretty much what I suspected would happen with balanced scoring across the board.”

Reeves was fairly certain he could count on senior sprinter Tannor Mroczek to bring home a gold medal in the 55-meter race.

“As he gets in better shape, he will get faster,” Reeves said.

The coach also figured Brett Dockweiler would place high or win the 1600-meter run and hoped Dillon Gartner could take first in the shot. Both did.
