Golfers improve invite score by 37 strokes
LEXINGTON—Gothenburg golfers took a giant leap forward last week with a 37-stroke improvement in their team invite score.
The Swedes finished 10th at the Lexington Invite on April 12 with a four-player team score of 365.
Two and a half weeks ago when the season began at the North Platte Invite, Gothenburg carded 402 as a team.
“The weather didn’t help us any. It was a horribly windy day but it was still a huge improvement,” said Swede coach Don Graham. “I think we have a ways to go yet but if we can keep dropping the numbers from one week to the next that’s a good sign we’re moving in the right direction.”
McCook won the team title at the Lakeside Country Club with a combined score of 310 including individual meet winner Sean Backer and three additional medalists.
North Platte finished runner-up carding 332 and Ogallala was third at 347.
In his first invite of the season, Gothenburg junior Jeramie VanAcker earned a medal in 15th place.
VanAcker shot 43 on the front nine and improved two strokes to 41 on the back to finish with a score of 84.
Jackson Graham finished just outside the medals with 88 and Matt Marshall shot a 90.
The Swede golfers will host their own 12-team invite at Wild Horse Golf Club on Thursday.
