Still room for improvement
New programs help raise scores.
The Brady school district implemented new programs last year to help raise reading scores on Nebraska State Accountability (NeSA) tests.
A 7% jump in those schoolwide scores released earlier this fall shows the changes may have worked.
Despite the increase, the district won’t take any focus off reading. Students still fall 1.9% below the state average and that’s not good enough for superintendent Bill Porter.
“I’m very happy with the progress but we want to continue to get better,” Porter said.
The district is tweaking programs in all grade levels to help students earn higher scores in math, science and writing as well.
The Nebraska Department of Education released all NeSA scores in its state of the schools report last week.
Porter said self-reported science scores that become mandatory next year are above mid-range but need pushed up before official testing this year.
Only fourth- and eighth-grade students at Brady took the writing test last year. Their average in both classes was above 90% proficient.
“The public numbers are a little sketchy because there are so few students in a couple of grades,” Porter said. “We are doing fine in all areas and working to make improvements across the board. We want what’s best for all of our students.”
