35,000 lbs. of potential hazardous waste collected

People gather a lot of hazardous household products if a waste collection service in September is any indication.

The Lexington Area Solid Waste Agency and the Southwest Nebraska Household Hazardous Waste Team visited Gothenburg and nine other sites to help people properly dispose potentially hazardous household products.

A grand total of 35,235 pounds of potentially hazardous waste was collected including 9,140 lbs. of paint, 2,000 lbs. of used oil, 5,820 lbs. of pesticides/herbicides, 515 lbs. of aerosols and other materials, 5,680 lbs. of batteries, 11,000 lbs. of computers/monitors and 1,080 lbs. of reuse materials.

The collection efforts were funded by the Lexington Area Solid Waste Agency and a one-year grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality’s Waste Reduction & Recycling Incentive Grant Program and local volunteers.

Others contributing to this free collection service were Red Willow Household Hazardous Waste Program and participating entities. In addition to hazardous household waste collection, the program encourages local recycling, reuse programs and purchasing products made with recycled materials in a central Nebraska area populated by over 45,000 people.
