Poor shooting hampers boys

ARAPAHOE—Some coaches would call a one-game shooting percentage at nearly half of a team’s average a fluke.

Gothenburg boys coach Roger Koehler hopes his team’s 29% from the field at Arapahoe is a short-lived slump.

The Swedes made only 13-of-46 field goal attempts on Jan. 10, falling to the Class D-1 Warriors 50-40.

“We had several shots that bounced around the rim and fell out,” Koehler said. “They had several bounce too but they fell the right way for them.”

The Swedes were 11-of-29 from two-point range and 2-of-17 behind the arch.

Senior Brett Dockweiler, a regular in Gothenburg’s scoring column, went 0-of-11.

“(Arapahoe) played man-to-man defense but they packed in the lane, double- and triple-teaming our big guys,” Koehler said. “When we kicked it back outside like we’re supposed to in that situation, we couldn’t get the shots to fall.”

Gothenburg had an 8-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and trailed 17-15 at halftime.

“We just couldn’t ever get on a roll,” Koehler said.

The Warriors held onto a slim 32-29 lead heading into the final period.

A little more than halfway through the fourth, Koehler said the Swedes made a nice run but couldn’t build an advantage.

“Then they hit a three-pointer and we missed on the next possession,” the coach said. “It kind of went downhill from there.”

The Swedes were forced to foul in the closing minutes to try and preserve precious seconds for scoring attempts but that strategy backfired as the Warriors were 8-of-10 from the line down the stretch.

Senior post player Korey Ahlenstorf led Gothenburg with 10 rebounds and 15 points including a pair of uncharacteristic three-pointers.

Alec Foster contributed 11 points.

“We really haven’t played well since the holiday break,” Koehler said of his Swedes. “But basketball is a long season. I think most teams have little slumps. Let’s hope that’s all it is and we can get this thing rolling again.”
