Gothenburg hosts junior high state championship
The Nebraska Middle School State Championships, hosted for the third year in Gothenburg, keeps getting bigger and bigger.
This year’s version on Saturday had approximately 550 competitors from 93 teams. With nearly 1,700 in paid attendance, 150 coaches, 100 plus officials and volunteers, total attendance hit 2,500.
Perhaps the biggest record of the day was set by Kenton Kobza of Fairbury. He erased his own mark in the discus set last year by more than 40 feet with a toss of 192-8.
Gothenburg’s best performances came in fourth place finishes by Colin Hahn in the 800 and 1600, boys 4x100 relay and girls 4x100 relay.
Ord easily captured the girls title scoring 58 points. Thayer Central nipped Holdrege by a point for the boys crown, 40-39.
