Students to return to school Aug. 16

Public invited to back-to-school night Aug. 14.

Samples from school lunch at Gothenburg Public Schools will be available during back-to-school night Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 5:30-8 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Classes begin Thursday, Aug. 16—at 8 a.m. for Dudley Elementary students and at 8:15 a.m. for those in junior and senior high.

During the open house, parents, students and the public can visit classrooms, meet teachers and review the safest routes to school. Businesses and organizations will have displays in the Main Street hallway of the high school.

At Dudley Elementary, class lists will be posted outside rooms and school personnel will be available to direct students to home rooms.

A carnival and games for kids, in kindergarten through fourth grade, will be offered on the west practice field.

Ninth graders and their parents will meet for orientation at 7 p.m. in the performing arts center.

On the first day of school (Aug. 16), junior and senior high students will meet in the performing arts center for a general assembly at 8:15 a.m.

Dudley Elementary students, grades 4-6, will gather at 9:45 a.m. in the PAC for a general assembly. Grades K-3 will meet at 10:35 a.m.

Classes will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

On Friday, the regular schedule gets underway. The junior-senior high will dismiss at 3:30 p.m. and the elementary at 3:15 p.m.

Kindergartners start with half-day classes—from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m.—until Tuesday, Sept. 4, when they begin full days.

Teachers return to school Monday through Wednesday for in-service days. New teachers have orientation this Friday.

On Tuesday, Aug. 14, Nebraska commissioner of education Dr. Roger Breed will speak to the faculty and administration at 9 a.m. in the PAC.

Once school begins, parents taking children to school are asked to drop off and pick up elementary students in front of the school on Avenue G while traveling north on the street.

Other drop off/pick up areas can be accessed by turning west onto 13th St. from Avenue I (the area is between Avenues H and I) and by entering the west parking lot.

Drop off and pick up for junior-senior high students is in front of the junior-senior high building on Avenue I.

Elementary students should not be picked up and dropped off by parents at the high school entrance because of safety reasons.

Children are reminded to use the crosswalks in front of the high school and elementary buildings.

Administrators also request that non-bus-riding Dudley students not arrive at school earlier than 7:50 a.m.

Busses will drop off and pick up students on the north side of the elementary.

Line up for Dudley students, at the doors to the building, is as follows:

Fifth and sixth graders at the entry doors south of the north parking lot.

Fourth grade on the east side of the elementary wing.

Second and third grade on the south playground.

Kindergarten through first grade on the north playground.

Early dismissals will air on KRVN radio, on television stations KNOP, NTV and KOLN-KGIN and through the district’s ConnectEd telephone and e-mail system.

Any child in seventh grade, kindergarten or new to the district is required to have current immunizations and physical examinations before school begins. Immunization records must be submitted for enrollment.
