Winning streak extends to 11

Volleyball team moves to 16-3

Gothenburg’s volleyball team remains at No. 7 in the state rankings by the Omaha World-Herald after extending a winning streak to 11 matches with victories over McCook and Lexington on Thursday.

It’s an exciting place for the Swedes to be, said coach Mary Clark. Carrying the target is unfamiliar with the girls but the new-found swagger is sure a lot of fun.

“This is such a good group of girls and they’ve worked so hard to get to this point,” Clark said. “We just have to keep reminding them that they can’t let their guard down even a little. The worst thing, the last thing, we want to do is take any team for granted.”

The Swedes didn’t look past McCook (10-14) or winless Lexington. Instead they tried to continue improving their play on their own side of the net.

Gothenburg allowed the Bison to stay relatively close in the first match of the triangular, even giving up a slight lead a time or two, but the Swedes prevailed 25-17, 25-21.

Jacey Wiggins had eight kills and eight set assists to lead the way offensively while Aryn Meisinger picked up 11 digs on defense.

Against Lexington, Clark was able to put more girls on the floor.

“The girls on the bench do a good job of challenging the top six in practice every day,” the coach said. “It’s nice to be able to get them some varsity playing time.”

Gothenburg defeated the Minutemaids 25-9, 25-13.

Wiggins was 16-of-16 serving with seven aces while Regan Geiken smacked seven kills and Tylyn Haynes had seven digs.

At 16-3, the Swedes have only one match this week, a head-to-head with Southwest (12-9) in a “pink out” parents night game on Thursday.

“It’s almost a let-down to only have one game this week,” Clark said. “The girls are having so much fun and they’re on a roll. They just want to play.”

Gothenburg travels to Broken Bow for a four-team invite on Tuesday with the Indians, Valentine and Doniphan-Trumbull.
