11 hits boost Swedes past Cozad 13-3

Two big innings powered Gothenburg past Cozad 13-3 in softball action Thursday.

The Swedes scored four runs in the third and five in the fifth to earn the run-rule-shortened game.

Gothenburg laced three singles into the outfield in the first inning but managed only two runs. Kyndal Holmes and Ashley Eskew each picked up an RBI.

The Swedes walked their way to their first run in a four-run third inning. The first two batters walked putting Emily Franzen at the plate. Haymaker coach HaLea Messersmith elected to avoid one of the Swedes’ leading hitters and called for an intentional walk.

Holmes followed with a walk to force in one run. Then, Eskew doubled to left-center driving in a pair of runs while Holmes eventually stole home to give Gothenburg a 6-0 lead.

Cozad sliced the deficit by two runs in the bottom of the third. Walks got things going for the Haymakers, too. An RBI single by Alyssa Schneider followed two free passes. Another run scored on a sacrifice bunt.

Gothenburg regained the four-run edge in the fourth inning when Holmes stroked a two-run double.

The Swedes padded their lead with five more runs in the fifth frame. Franzen drove in a pair with a two-run single. Another run scored on a single by Becca Riley, a fourth on a ground ball by Katlin Harm and the final run on an error.

A lead-off by Cozad in the bottom of the fifth turned into the Haymakers’ last run of the game.

Holmes paced the Swede hitters with three hits and four runs batted in.

Rebecca Anderson started on the mound and threw three innings while picking up the victory.

A fifth inning rally fell one run short as Gothenburg dropped a 15-14 decision to Cozad.

The line score:

Gothenburg 00266—14

Cozad 2607x—15

HITTING: Kyann LeViner and Tish Winter each had two hits.

PITCHING: Morgan Cardeñas struck out two, walked one and gave up eight earned runs.
