Gothenburg junior high runners place at state CC meet at Papillion

Gothenburg’s junior high cross country team participated in the state cross country meet Saturday in Papillion.

The Swedes ran at Papillion LaVista High School and Walnut Creek in Papillion on a challenging course.

“They weren’t intimidated by the schools there or by the kids,” head coach Steve Reeves said. “It was a fitting end to the season.

The girls team finished third with 103 points, led by Kayla Weyers’ third place finish. Kaitlyn Kleinknecht also medaled completing the course in 12:18 fast enough for 13th place.

Papillion finished first with 65 points followed by Omaha Westside with 81.

Reeves said the eighth grade girls will add to an already deep varsity team next year as freshman.

“You can never have to much depth and these girls will help out quite a bit,” Reeves said.

The boys team was led by Blake Riley who ran the race in 11:03 and earned 14th place.

He paced the team as Gothenburg finish fourth with 172 points.

The top three teams were LaVista, Papillion and Omaha Westside.

Reeves was pleased with the effort of the boys and thinks some will run varsity next year as freshman.
