School foundation seeks donations

The Gothenburg Public Schools foundation awards about $6,500 annually for students going to college.

Raising scholarship money is the primary function of the foundation, according to foundation chair Nate Wyatt.

Right now, Wyatt said, the resources are limited.

“We’re trying to get money put together to have a bigger impact on the school,” he said

To donate, money can be brought to his office at Gothenburg State Bank or to the counselor’s office in the high school.

If people want to develop a scholarship, or administer an already existing scholarship, they can do that through Gothenburg State Bank, he said.

While most donations are unrestricted, allowing the money to be given for scholarships, there are amounts that are left to the foundation for specific scholarships or projects.

But scholarships are not the only reason to donate.

The money is also used for Gothenburg Public School improvements.

In years past, the foundation has received donations to upgrade the high school’s track and its surface and had land donated south of the baseball field for use during school or community activities.

More recently, Wyatt said, foundation money has provided benches inside and outside the school and a flag pole outside of Dudley Elementary.

“We also try and set up resources for projects the school hasn’t budgeted for,” Wyatt said.

These additions and improvements to Gothenburg Public Schools have been chosen by the foundation board, which is 100% volunteer, Wyatt said.

“Anything donated is being put back into the good of the school,” Wyatt said. “There is no overhead, or drag by the members. It’s all volunteer.”

He added that it’s fun to be a part of the foundation board because each member has the best interest of the school and the community in mind.

“It’s exciting to try and grow our resources for a good cause,” Wyatt said.
