GMH prepares for Wellness Fair next week

Kauffman: Affordable blood testing offered throughout week

Gothenburg Memorial Hospital will host its 16th annual Wellness Fair on May 9 but blood draws began on Monday.

In past years, the event was known as the health fair but the switch to wellness was made to send a more encouraging message.

“We see it as our honor to partner with the community to help them not only when they’re sick but to be well,” said Katie Beth Kauffman, GMH planning and development director.

Blood screening this week

Blood screening is available the rest of this week from 6:30 to 9 a.m. Thursday and Friday and 7-9 a.m. on Saturday.

A chemistry 12 profile and lipid panel or vitamin D test will each cost $35. C-reactive protein tests, which can help detect heart disease, cost $25. Tests that screen for prostate cancer and thyroid gland problems are available for $20.

Test results will be available during the Wellness Fair.

A 5K race, and one-mile fun run for kids, will also take place on May 9. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. with races beginning at 8 a.m.

The fair is after the race, with activities beginning at 9 a.m.

Free brunch served

GMH dietician Mary Lou Block will serve some creative and healthy brunch options, Kauffman said. Block will also provide an educational table for kids which will promote healthy breakfast and snack options for families on the go.

There will also be a wide array of booths to visit. Physicians, nurses, dentists, chiropractors, home health providers, spas and massage therapists are all expected to attend.

Passports and prizes

In addition, she said there will be a passport program offered with people receiving a stamp for participating in wellness activities. The stamps will be used to enter participants for door prizes.

Kids can also challenge themselves with an obstacle course and state troopers will be on hand to assist with car seat checks.

“This Wellness Fair is an opportunity for us to share fun, interactive ways to be fit and healthy,” Kauffman said.

Fair events are schedule to end around noon.
