Bernard Lechewr, 71 - January 17, 2014Bernard Nicolas Lecher, 71, of Chadron passed away at his home on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014.
Services will take place on Friday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chadron with the Rev. Tim Stoner officiating. Burial will be at the Calvary Cemetery at Chadron.
A rosary will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick’s.
Lecher was born at Chadron, the fourth of seven children to Tommy and Fern (Harrison) Lecher. He graduated from Assumption Academy in 1960.
He married Harriet Eileen Burke on June 25, 1960, at the St. Patrick’s Church in Chadron. To this union, three children were born.
Lecher began his career in the car business with the Ford Garage in Chadron. In 1964, he and his wife moved to Crawford where he began his employment with Crawford Implement Company. He also sold both vehicles and machinery for Harvey Equipment.
He then took his knowledge of livestock and numerous business acquaintances and became a field representative for Chadron Sale Barn.
In 1988, he and his wife moved back to Chadron where he sold vehicles for both Tommy’s Car Lot and then Wahlstrom Ford, retiring in 2006.
Lecher was a member of the Crawford Fire Department, Chadron Elks Club and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
He enjoyed his horses and motorcycles—during his younger years—and his family, especially his grandchildren, family members said. He was a horseman and a gentleman, and remembered everyone and shared his smile with them.
Lecher was preceded in death by: his wife in 2005, Harriet Lecher; his parents, Tom and Fern Lecher; a sister, LaWayne Jones.
Survivors include: his sons—Nick (Liz) Lecher of Port St. Lucie, FL, Mike (Diana) Lecher of Chadron and Chris (Christy) Lecher of Gothenburg; grandchildren—Alex Smith of Douglas, WY, Jessica Lecher of Rapid City, SD, Sarah Lecher of Chadron, and Keely and Ashley Lecher of Gothenburg; siblings—Wayne (Virginia) Sides of Torrington, WY, Janice (Mitch) Magruder of Nevada, MO, Steve (Diane) Lecher of Chadron, Susan (Larry) Gold of Council Bluffs, IA, and Curt (Mary) Lecher, also of Chadron; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Dawes County Ag Society and the Crawford Fire Department. Donations are suggested to the Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.
