H. Truman Barrett, 101 - March 18, 2009

H. Truman Barrett, 101, of Eustis, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.
Services were held on Monday, March 16, at the United Methodist Church of Eustis with the Revs. Art Phillips and Cliff Transmeier officiating. Burial took place at the Westview Cemetery.
Barrett was born Oct. 14, 1907, at Orafino, to Harley and Pearl (Bailey) Barrett. He attended Orafino High School, after which he worked on the family farm southwest of Eustis.
On May 1, 1931, he married Ruth E. Heater at McCook. The couple resided on the family farm where they raised their children. In the mid 1940’s, Barrett expanded his farm into the Hereford cattle business.
Upon retirement in 1977, he and his wife moved to Eustis, where she preceded him in death in 1999.
Barrett was an active member of local civic affairs. He served on various rural school boards, the Frontier County Historical Society, the Farnam Nazarene Church Board, Frontier County Farm Bureau, the Eustis Village Board, Stowe Cemetery Board and the 4-H Senior Partner’s Program. He also organized the Rolling Meadows 4-H Beef Club and was a lifetime member of the American Hereford Association.
He was a member of the Free Methodist Church during his younger years, and later became a member of the Farnam Nazarene Church. He also joined the Gideon’s International upon retirement.
?Barrett was an avid Scrabble player and an NU football fan. He enjoyed studying the Bible and spending time with family and friends as well as participating as an active member of the Eustis Senior Center.
?He was preceded in death by: his wife, Ruth; a grandson, Kurt Miller; an infant great-granddaughter, Brittany Lee Burton; three sisters and one brother.
Survivors include: his three daughters—Kathleen (Richard) Miller of Cambridge, Rosalie (Wayne) Joy of Kimball, and Gwen (Loren) Carlisle of Colon, MI; a son, Bruce (Loretta) Barrett of Gothenburg; 11 grandchildren—Trisha (Bill) Moore of Cambridge, Coralyn (Bill) Burton of McCook, Michelle (Dudley) Scharff of Minden, Barbara (Rodney) Wolf of Ogallala, Bryan (Cassandra) Barrett of Dexter, OR, Barry Barrett of Pensacola, FL, Brent (Sharon) Joy of Clearwater, FL, Yvette (Allen) Stanley of Aurora, CO, Vanessa (Michael) West of Chicago, IL, Vonda (Eric) Bryce of Grandville, MI, and Elizabeth Carlisle of Chicago, IL; 26 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established.
