Joan Ostergard, 78 - August 15, 2014Joan A. Ostergard, 78, of Gothenburg passed away Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at the First Presbyterian Church of Gothenburg, 1020 Lake Ave. A private family burial will be at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
A visitation will take place on Monday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel of Gothenburg with family members present from 5 to 7 p.m.
Ostergard was born April 23, 1936, at Gothenburg, the daughter of LaVern A. and Dorothy L. Wickstrom.
She lived at Gothenburg her entire life and graduated from Gothenburg High School with the Class of 1954, where she was the editor of the school newspaper, a drum major and a member of the National Honor Society.
On Feb. 18, 1956, she married Larry Ostergard at the First Presbyterian Church of Gothenburg.
Together with her husband they owned and operated Larry’s Plumbing and Heating from 1969 until 2005, when they sold their business to Eustis Plumbing and Heating. In 1990, they began a Hereford cattle operation just west of town.
She purchased the Hallmark business from Gallagher Pharmacy in 1992 and began Joan’s Hallmark until her retirement in early 2013.
Ostergard had served as president of the Chamber of Commerce.
She and her husband enjoyed golfing together and playing duplicate bridge, according to family members. She taught bridge lessons to numerous people and participated in local bridge clubs.
Ostergard spent numerous summers keeping the scorebook and driving baseball teams her husband coached to their out-of-town games.
For over 25 years, the couple belonged to the Touchdown Club and enjoyed travelling to all of the Nebraska home football games as well as several bowl games. They were avid fans of the Gothenburg Swedes and the St. Louis Cardinals as well.
Ostergard made the house on the corner of 1522 Ave. C the family home and gathering place for many. Her most favorite time was spent with her family and granddaughters as well as sitting on the front porch, said family members.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, LaVern and Dorothy Wickstrom; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harry and Ilene Ostergard; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim and Betty Ostergard; brother-in-law, Don Ostergard.
Survivors include: her husband of 58 years, Larry Ostergard; her daughters—Lori (Bruce) Clymer and Lynn (Tim) Peterson, all of Gothenburg; her sons—Doak Ostergard (special friend Ruthie Franzen) of Lincoln and Doug (Audra) Ostergard of Lincoln; granddaughters—Kelsey Peterson and Logan Ostergard, both of Lincoln; Jennie Clymer, Jill Clymer and Josie Clymer, all of Omaha; Kiley Peterson of Milwaukee, WI; Kaitlyn Peterson and Kira Peterson of Kearney; great-granddaughter, McKenna Peterson of Gothenburg; sisters—Marilyn Hemenway of Omaha and Sue Ostergard of Gothenburg; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law—Jack and Mary Ostergard, Dick and Connie Ostergard and Ron and Kayleen Ostergard, all of Gothenburg; numerous nieces and nephews.
