Adelyn Hess, 79 - December 24, 2015

Adelyn Jeanette (Preitauer) Hess, 79, of York, formerly of Gothenburg, passed away Dec. 24, 2015.
A celebration of life service was conducted at Lakeside Fellowship Church in Alma on Saturday, March 12, at 12 noon with the Rev. Duane Russell officiating.
Hess was born at her grandparent’s home east of Gothenburg in Dawson County on Nov. 23, 1936, the first of six children born to Stanley and Ilah (Koster) Preitauer.
She received her primary education from Valley School District No. 47, prior to graduating from Gothenburg High School with the Class of 1954.
On April 7, 1957, she was united in marriage to Clifford Hess of rural Farnam. To this union, two children were born.
After the couple started out with a one-room house near Gothenburg, they then rented a farm near Curtis. In 1965, they purchased a farm southwest of Alma, near Fisherman’s Gate.
In addition to being a farmer’s wife, she was a farmer herself. She pulled pigs, worked cattle, hilled and harvested crops. There was even an article written about her in the Nebraska Farmer Magazine.
Hess and her husband were active in surrounding communities and were members of the Alma Evangelical Free Church, served on the board, and were active with FCWM, VBS and AWANA. They were also involved with Farm Bureau, 4-H, and served on the Eldorado Township Election Board. In addition, they volunteered at Camp Joy, handed out Bibles as members of Gideon’s International and were TFC Connection sponsors.
Faith and family were important to her and she asked Jesus to be her Lord and Savior in 1969, according to family members. She enjoyed reading her Bible daily. She was creative, making decorations and centerpieces for special events, and even designed custom cakes for each of her grandchildren’s birthdays.
?Two years following her husband’s passing, she moved into Orleans in 1996. She was active in the Civic Club and worked as a waitress at the Melrose Inn. She was also the custodian at Lakeside Fellowship Church in Alma until moving to York in 2013.
Hess enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in various sports and school activities, said the family.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Clifford; parents, Stanley and Ilah; sisters—Myrna Sawle and Joann Mathews; a brother, William Preitauer; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law.
Survivors include: her children—Glenn (Cheryl) Hess of York and Marla (Jerral) Svehla of Omaha; 11 grandchildren—Channa (Lance) Evans of Fremont, Preston, Cierra, Valerie, Mataia, Zane and Jadon Hess of York, Ethan (Michelle) Svehla of Grandview, MO, Solomon, Tamara and Sarah Svehla of Omaha; a great-granddaughter, Sophia Svehla of Grandview; brother, John Preitauer of Stamford; a sister, Joyce Preitauer of Lincoln; her in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of family members.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Gideon’s International.
