Dr. Larry Garrett, 75 - June 21, 2016

Dr. Larry D. Garrett, 75, of Gothenburg passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Gothenburg.
Services were conducted at the Trinity Lutheran Church on Monday, June 27, with the Rev. Jeff Cottingham officiating. Interment took place at the Gothenburg Cemetery.
Garrett was born April 7, 1941, son of Donald and Dorothy (Colerick) Garrett at Alliance, where he grew up.
He married Barbara Dietrich on Aug. 7, 1960, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance.
Garrett attended Chadron State College from 1959 to 1962, and Southern College of Optometry (SCO) in Memphis, TN, graduating in 1965, where he was president and salutatorian of his graduating class.
He and his wife then moved to Gothenburg where he began his optometric practice on Sept. 7, 1965. He also had a satellite practice in Cozad for 18 years.
Garrett served as president of the NCIP (Nebraska Community Improvement Program) and was a 33-year member of GVFD.
He traveled to Bolivia, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and twice to Peru with Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) giving free eye exams to the underprivileged.
?Garrett was preceded in death by: his parents, Donald and Dorothy; a brother, Dennis Garrett; sister-in-law, Julieanne (Pape) Garrett; a niece, Denille Garrett-Burke; his in-laws—Alex and Shirley Dietrich, Jack and Alma Runge and Kenneth Dietrich.
Survivors include: his wife, Barbara Garrett of Gothenburg; his daughter, Lisa (Jon) Seimer of Gothenburg; grandchildren—Alex and Abby Meyer; two brothers—Randall and Gregory (Cheryl) Garrett; nieces, nephews and extended family members.
