Douglas Swan, 73 - March 21, 2017

Douglas Lee Swan, 73, of Cozad passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at his home.
Services were conducted on Friday, March 24, at the Gothenburg Evangelical Free Church with the Rev. Scott Newman officiating. Burial, with military honors, took place at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell.
Swan was born Aug. 12, 1943, at Gothenburg to Melvin and Florence (Henderson) Swan. He grew up on a family farm and graduated from Gothenburg High School with the Class of 1961.
He was baptized at the Gothenburg Evangelical Free Church at the age of 10 and accepted Christ at the age of 12.
Swan joined the U.S. Air Force in 1964, and married Kay Haynes in 1965.
While with the Air Force, he served as a C-133 Crew Chief. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal and was awarded Crew Chief of the Year. He was proud of the time he spent serving his country, according to family members.
Following his service commitment, he and his wife moved to Cozad to start their family.
Swan was employed as a postal carrier for over 30 years and was active in the community.
He served as a City Council member and served on the Cozad Housing Board. He was also a member of the Lions Club, VFW and Legion.
?Swan was a faithful member of his church serving as an usher and helping with the Awana Youth program.
?He enjoyed woodworking, making furniture and toys, being outside and on the road as well as anything to do with planes, trucks and trains, the family stated. His most treasured times were spent with his children and grandchildren.
Swan was preceded in death by: his parents, Melvin and Florence.
Survivors include: his wife, Kay of Cozad; a son, Michael (Karla) Swan of Lincoln; his daughter, Melissa (Andres Salazar) Swan of Longmont, CO; grandchildren—Caden and Luke Swan of Lincoln and Andrew and Olivia Leaming of Longmont; brothers—Paul (Kathy) Swan of Buffalo Grove, IL, and Nick (Linda) Swan of Gothenburg; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Memorials are suggested to the Cozad Fire & Rescue or donor’s choice.
