Doris Hirsch, 87 - September 19, 2007

Doris Aileene Hirsch, 87, of Gothenburg, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
Services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the American Lutheran Church of Gothenburg with the Rev. Matthew Groenke officiating. Burial took place at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery.
Hirsch was born on March 2, 1920, at Omaha, the daughter of Robert G. and Dora Belle (Morton) Lynch. She grew up at Roseland and attended Roseland Public Schools.
After graduating high school, she attended Hastings College, double majoring in music and art. In 1941, she received a bachelor’s degree in both.
In the spring of 1943, Hirsch entered the U.S. Navy. She attended boot camp at Hunter College in New York City, and after boot camp, took six months of advanced training in music at the College of William and Mary at Williamsburg, VA, and was then stationed at the Navy base in New London, CT. She served as an assistant to the Navy Chaplain.
On Oct. 28, 1947, she was united in marriage to Harlen Arthur Hirsch. To this union, three children were born, Victoria, Valerie and Gregory.
She worked as an educator and a principal, teaching in Clovis, NM, Anselmo-Merna and Gothenburg Public Schools. She also taught and was principal at 100-R Elementary School.
Hirsch was involved in the Community Playhouse, was a 4-H club leader, was involved in the cancer support group, a dance club and the Extension Club, was a Senior Center volunteer and served on its governing board.
?She enjoyed sewing and creating porcelain dolls, but her favorite passion was music, according to family members. She enjoyed playing the piano, and with her talents, she served as choir director at the American Lutheran Church, and also helped with the Wings program. She was also very proud of being Mrs. Senior Nebraska in 1991, the family said.
Hirsch was preceded in death by: her husband, Harlen A. Hirsch; her parents, Robert G. and Dora Belle Lynch; a sister, Madelyn Tewes.
Survivors include: her son, Gregory Lynn (Robin) Hirsch of Gothenburg; two daughters—Victoria Lue (Gary) Boyer of LaCygne, KS, and Valerie Kay (Bradley) Brooks of Orange County, CA; seven grandchildren—Terri (Brad) Morrow, Heath (Margaret) Mann, Brandon (Andrea) Mann, Trent (Kristi) Hovie, Tracy Hovie, Jobey Brooks, Ryan Boyer and Regan Boyer; eight great-grandchildren—Taylor, Paul, Sydney, Suzannah, Ellen, Madelyn, Lillian and Talan.
