Patricia Book Perry, 87 - September 13, 2011


Patricia Book Perry, PhD., 87, of North Platte, formerly of Omaha, NE, died Sept. 13, 2011, in North Platte.
Memorial service and inurnment will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at All Saints Episcopal Church, Omaha.
Perry was born July 30, 1924, in Harlan, IA, to Charles and Erie Bailey Book. She graduated from Bishop Clarkson School of Nursing in Omaha as a registered nurse in 1945. She married Samuel H. Perry, M.D., Dec. 30, 1944.
They lived in Gothenburg, where he practiced medicine and they raised their two children. While living there, she was instrumental in the establishment of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, a mission parish in Cozad. She was a member of PEO Chapter AW.
In 1966 they moved to Omaha where she returned to college and graduated from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, with a bachelor of science in nursing in 1969 and a master’s of education in 1973. She received her doctor of philosophy in adult education from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 1978.
In 1966, Dr. Perry returned to Bishop Clarkson School of Nursing as an instructor of basic sciences. In 1976 she was appointed director of Bishop Clarkson School of Nursing, then dean of the college in 1981, and president in 1988.
She led the institution’s transition from a diploma granting school to a college that now grants bachelor and master’s degrees in various medical related disciplines. During her tenure at Clarkson College, Dr. Perry was recognized as a highly respected educator and professional throughout the country and by her many students, according to her family.
Her favorite part of education was teaching students the science of nursing and life skills. She retired from Bishop Clarkson College in 1990 and remained president emeritus until her death.
She was active at All Saints Episcopal Church, Omaha, served on the vestry, and was their first female warden. She was also an avid Husker fan attending all home and away football games.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; and husband, Samuel H. Perry, M.D.
Perry is survived by: her son, Samuel H. Perry II, M.D. and his wife Lynda of North Platte; daughter, Patricia E. Kampfe and her husband Randall of Decatur, IL; grandsons, Samuel Perry III, Mitchell Perry and his wife, Nikki; granddaughters, Anne Sievers and her husband Shann and Elizabeth Plinske and her husband Paul; plus four great grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Robert E. Owens of Cozad, NE.
