William Hickey, 71 - April 23, 2012
William Eugene Hickey, 71, of Cozad, passed away Monday, April 23, 2012, at his home in Cozad after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.
Mass of the Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Christ the King Catholic Church in Cozad with the Rev. Don O’Brien as celebrant. Burial will be held in the St. Anselm’s Cemetery at Anselmo at 2 p.m.
Bill was born Dec. 22, 1940, to William J. and Gertrude (McCarthy) Hickey at their home near Anselmo. He received his early education at rural schools in Custer County. He started high school at Arnold and would go on to graduate from Anselmo High School in 1958. In 1961, he received a diploma from the Grand Island School of Business.
He held various jobs including hay camp foreman near Valentine, hauling sugar beets, working as a salesman for the Broken Bow Chief Office and was a general ranch hand in the Sandhills.
On June 6, 1964, Bill married Lois Kinish at Anselmo. This union was blessed with three children, Shawn, Christopher and Sharilee. The couple lived in the Cozad area their entire married life. Bill was employed with Tenneco Automotive for over 38 years, retiring in 2001 as a general foreman.
Bill’s children and grandchildren were his pride and joy; he taught them about nature and wildlife at an early age and was passionate about hunting and fishing, family members said. He always believed work should be done before play. His leathercraft was enjoyed by many people.
Bill had other interests which included bull riding, golden glove boxing, bowling and registered trap shooting. He helped coach a trap shooting club for high school students at Cozad. He was a faithful blood donor having donated over 13 gallons of blood throughout his life.
He was a member of the Christ the King Catholic Church, the Amateur Trap Shooting Association, the National Rifle Association and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Michael; step-father, Lyle Kutsch; and sister-in-law, Connie Hickey.
Bill is survived by: his wife of 47 years, Lois Hickey of Cozad; two sons—Shawn (Karma) Hickey of Smithfield, Chris (Kris) Hickey of Boelus; a daughter, Shari Hickey of Cozad; four granddaughters—Taylor and Lauren Hickey of Smithfield and Leslie and Autumn Hickey of Boelus; two brothers—Kenneth Hickey of Fairfield and Jim Hickey of Tryon; a sister, Karen Brooks of Holdrege; sister-in-law, Virginia Hickey of Alda; and many aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
