Ellen Lydia (Toots) May, 94 - November 05, 2012Ellen Lydia “Toots” May, 94, longtime Albany County, WY, resident and originally of Gothenburg, passed away Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Laramie, WY.
Services will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home with the Rev. Kristy May officiating. Interment will be at the Greenhill Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the Elks Club.
Services are under the direction of Montgomery-Stryker Funeral Home.
May was born at Gothenburg on May 16, 1918, to Esther and Cela Morrison. After attending Gothenburg schools and graduating from high school in 1935, she taught school for two years before meeting her future husband, Jim May.
She and Jim were married on June 28, 1939, and moved to the May Ranch where they lived for the next 73 years. To this union, two sons were born.
In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she also worked in the hay fields when needed, cooked for the hired hands and anyone else who happened to drop in, helped with round-up and branding, calf pulling and other ranch chores, family members said.
The Little Laramie community benefitted from her generous efforts, according to the family, and for many years, she was secretary for the Little Laramie Telephone Company.
May served on the Little Laramie Community Election Board for more than 20 years and was secretary for the Little Laramie, Albany County and Central District Farm Bureau as well as an active member of the Little Laramie Fire Department Auxiliary.
As a charter member of Albany County Cowbells, she took great interest in promoting beef. She was both vice-president and beef promotion chairman during her active years with that organization. She also served as editor of the first Albany County Beef Cook Book and compiled recipes for the Albany County Beef Hors d’ Oeuvres Cook Book.
In 1971, she and other Cowbells, served a beef fondue, Wyoming style, on Wall Street. More recently, she was given a distinguished service award for beef promotion by the Wyoming Cowbells.
May and her husband found time to host many dances at the Little Laramie Community Hall. She also enjoyed playing golf, knitting and reading, said family.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Esther and Cela; a brother, Lawrence Morrison.
Survivors include: her husband, Jim; her two sons—Jim (Barbara) May of Papillion and Marshall May of Laramie; grandchildren—Jamie (Jim) Adams of Colorado Springs, CO, Joel (Becki) May of Manhattan Beach, CA, Michael (Kristy) May of Waubun, MN, Kevin May of Denver, CO, and Elizabeth (Matt) Chadek of LaVista; great-grandchildren—Paige, Luke and Alyssa Adams, Emma and Ava May, Caden and Alexis Chadek and Jaden May; numerous nieces and nephews.
