School board discusses graduation policy

Seniors at Brady High School may not get to participate in commencement exercises if they have not successfully completed all of the requirements for graduation.

School board members discussed a student handbook change during Monday’s monthly meeting, approving an addition to the student handbook contingent upon official policy approval.

Superintendent James McGown said there has not been a district policy that specifically addresses whether a senior can walk with classmates during the graduation ceremony if he or she has not met the requirements.

“We’re in the business of educating students,” said board member Ryan Stearns. “I think if they haven’t done what it takes to graduate, they shouldn’t be part of graduation. Why sugarcoat it?”
