McCook course tough but Swedes score well

McCOOK—Gothenburg golfers were among players from 14 high school teams who tried to conquer a difficult Heritage Hills golf course in McCook last week.

The Swedes finished 11th with a team score of 377.

McCook’s red team won the invite with 338, one stroke better than runner-up York.

“I thought it was a somewhat positive performance, considering it was on a very difficult course with windy conditions,” said Swede coach Jim Henke. “We had two guys shoot in the 80s, which hasn’t happened too much recently.”

Alex Peden finished with 87 and and Thomas Bokelman shot an 89, his personal best for 18 holes.

Henke said Derek Franzen and Lucas Pelzer played reasonably well on their first attempt at Heritage Hills. They scored 99 and 102, repsectively.

Senior Chase Maurer got off to a tough start with two out of bounds shots on the first hole, Henke said and he a lost ball on the second.

“It was pretty difficult for him to recover, despite his valiant efforts,” Henke said.

Maurer finished with 110.
