Kathleen (Kay) Grove 89, of Gothenburg, NE, passed away Nov. 29, 2021 at her home in Gothenburg. Kay is a loved and devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family. She relished the relationships with cousins and her pen-pal from her youth. Kay enjoyed having family for coffee and cookies; a tradition that was passed to her by her mother. She enjoyed her gardens, baking and cooking wonderful meals with family during the holidays and was proud of her Swedish roots, from which she pulled recipes and decorative styles in the holidays. Kay was caring and committed in her fields of education and nursing toward everyone she served.
Kay was born on April 14, 1932 in Lexington, NE to Robert R. and Violet (Sylvan) Harrington. She grew up in Lexington and graduated from the Lexington School System. She attended Colorado Woman’s College from 1950-1951 and then Kearney State College from 1952-1958, where she earned her teaching certificate and was a member of Sigma Theta Phi. She was active in the United Methodist Church in Choir and as a Sunday School Teacher. Kay married William J. (Joe) Grove in June of 1958 at the United Methodist Church of Gothenburg. They relocated to Richardson, TX where they raised their children, until Joe’s death in February 1973. Kay and Joe were active in the First Christian Church. Kay then moved with her children back to Gothenburg and subsequently, Sutherland, NE, where she continued to raise them while Teaching 3rd and 4th graders; a career that she loved. Kay returned to School in 1981, at the North Platte Vocational School, where she earned her Practical Nursing license. She worked in hospice care and later cared for both her mother and her father in their later years.
Kay is survived by her daughters, JoAnn Grove and Linda Grove of Gothenburg, NE and son, William Grove of Knoxville, TN; Granddaughter and husband, Tasha and Shane Kruse, and children Levi, Gavin, Drayden, and Alaura and Granddaughter and husband, Kady and Jesse Jacobs; and their children Dominic, Brett, Alaura, and Mac; Sister-in-law Margy Harrington of Loup City and their children, Dick, David, and Kirk and their families. She is preceded in death by her husband, William J. Grove, her parents, Robert R. and Violet Sylvan Harrington, her brother, Robert E. Harrington, and her Nephew, Roger Harrington.
Visitation will be on Friday, Dec. 3, 2021 at 9:00 am – 11:00 am at Blasé-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, NE.
