Shirley Georgene (Meester) Claflin, 80, of Gothenburg passed away Dec. 31, 2018 at the Gothenburg Hospital.   

Shirley was born Feb. 14, 1938, the daughter of Walter and Johanna Meester in Gothenburg.  Shirley graduated from Gothenburg High with the class of 1955.

On June 2, 1957, she married Edward E. Claflin and to this union they had two daughters, Michelle and Melissa.

Shirley lived in Gothenburg all of her life with the exception of a brief time at Fort Riley, Kansas, when Ed was in the military.  She worked several jobs in town including Meyers Drug, babysitting, Social Service work and she retired from the Post Office as a Rural Route Carrier.  She was a member of the American Lutheran Church.  

Besidesspendingtimewithherfamily,Shirley enjoyed camping, square dancing, crocheting afghans for family and friends, doing craft projects and adding to her collection of cookbooks and nativities (last count was over 350).  

.Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Ed Claflin of Gothenburg; daughter, Michelle (Mike) Courtney of Lincoln;  daughter, Melissa (Terry J.R.) Walker of Gothenburg; grandchildren, Courtnee (Jordan) Magnuson, Levi, Alexander, Xavier and Gabriella Walker; great grandchildren, Khloe Georgene and Oakley Tyler Magnuson; a sister, Bonnie (Dexter) Wedemeyer of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and many nieces and nephews and extended family.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Johanna Meester; brothers, Larry, Ronnie and Robert Meester; and a grandson, Tyler Lee Walker.

Visitation was held at Blasé-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, on Friday, Jan. 4.

Funeral services were held at the American Lutheran Church on Saturday, Jan. 5, with Pastor John Mapa officiating. Internment was held at the Christ Lutheran Cemetery with a light lunch following at the church.
