The winter sports practices have began for all the area High School teams. The wrestlers have began weigh-ins and have went to work on strength training and the skills needed to be successful on the mats this upcomming season. The area boys and girls Basketball Teams have been working on conditioning and team movements on the hardwoods.

The Gothenburg Lady Swedes

The Gothenburg Lady Swedes battled hard but came up short in four sets to Grand Island Central Catholic on Wednesday at pinnacle Bank Arena as part of the 2021 NSAA Volleyball Championships in Class C1. Gothenburg Swedes took the first set 27-25 and played the Crusaders hard the other three but lost by scores of 18-25, 21-25 and 17-25. The Swedes performed well for the first time to the big show in Lincoln.

Pool League Champions Crowned

Local poolplayers were recently recognized for winning the Summer Session of the American Poolplayers Association (APA) 8-Ball and 9-Ball Pool Leagues.

The Gothenburg Swedes Varsity Volleyball team won three sets in the Monday night district volleyball tournament in Kearney against Broken Bow. The Swedes won by scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-18. The match was close throughout the contest and both teams battled hard for the win.

The Gothenburg Swedes Varsity Football team played the Schools annual Homecoming game Friday night against Mitchell and came away with the win 34-6 in Gridiron action. The Gothenburg Team looked good on both sides of the ball. The Swedes dominated Mitchel with three hundred twenty-three yards of total offense, while Mitchell had two hundred eight total yards in the contest. Gothenburg running backs rushed thirty-five time for one hundred sixty yards, Mitchell rushed for one hundred forty-seven yards on forty-two attempts. In the passing game the were five of eleven for one hundred sixty-three yards. Mitchell threw four of thirteen passes for at total of sixty-one yards during the contest. The Gothenburg defense also came u with two turnovers on two interceptions as the defense played well on the home field under the lights.

On Saturday the Gothenburg Swedes varsity Softball team played Southern Valley and came out with a win after a close contest. The Swedes jumped out to an early lead over Southern Valley/alma when the Swedes scored three in the bottom of the first inning.


On Thursday afternoon Gothenburg hosted a Cross Country Invite at Wild Horse golf course. There were eleven girl's teams and sixteen boy's teams that competed in the event. The Men’s team standings were, (1)Broken Bow, (2) Minden, (3) Gothenburg, (4) Lexington, (5) Holdrege, (6) McCook, (7) North Platte, (8) Stapleton, (9) Sutherland Public, (10) Kearney, (11) Paxton, (12) Hershey, (13) Arapahoe, (14) Cambridge, (15) Hitchcock county, (16) Kimball. The women’s team standings were, (1) North Platte, (2) Minden, (3) Broken Bow, (4) McCook, (5) Cambridge, (6) Gothenburg, (7) Wallace, (8) Lexington, (9) Sutherland public, (10) Hitchcock county, (11) Arapahoe.
